Uglies By Scott Westerfeld (Contemporary Realistic Fiction) (Action/Adventure)

I read the book Uglies by Scott Westerfeld.  This book was published by Simon Pulse.  This is the first book in a series.  In this book,  a girl named Tally is about to turn 16.  In this world, turning 16 means that you will turn pretty.  Operations are given to people who turn 16 to turn them from what is perceived from the community as a terribly ugly person into an amazingly attractive person.  You also get to live in a new high-tech paradise where you just have to focus on having a great time and partying.  However, Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure that she wants to become pretty and so she decides to run away.  Tally ends up learning about a whole different side of the pretty world and realizes that it really isn't all that pretty.  Eventually, the authorities offer Tally a decision.  Tally must either find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty.  This book is an adventure about Tally's life changing and world changing decision.
I think this might not be a book that I would assign to my whole class to read, but a book that I would allow students to choose for a project where they can choose any book they want.  I would assess this book by giving students a list of activities to choose from for their assessment.  A few activities might be to make a timeline, a poster, book review, author study, commercial, book trailer, comic strip etc.
