I read the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen and published by Simon and Schuster Books for Young People. This is the first book in a series. This story is a survival story about a 13 year old boy named Brian. Brian is on a small private plan ride to Canada to visit his father for the summer right after his parents divorce. The plane crashes in the middle of the woods. The pilot suffered from a heart attack and died and Brian barely escapes the crash. All Brian has to survive is a tattered windbreaker and the hatchet that his mother gave to him right before he left. This is the story about Brian's survival.
I love this book so much and would love to have every student read it. I think this book is appropriate for upper elementary aged school children. This is a book that I read in fourth grade in a book club and I think there is a lot of activities that teachers can do with their students. I think it would be fun for teachers to have students summarize each chapter, create a book review, game to go with the book, cartoon, song about the book, commercial, movie trailer, short skit, etc. There are so many interesting and adventurous scenes in the book and I think readers can find at least something in the book that they'd like to work with for their assessment.
Subject: Bravery, teen struggles, survival, action, adventure
- Genre: Contemporary realistic fiction
- Awards: Newbery Honor Book
- This is a YouTube link to a short clip of Gary Paulsen, the author talking. I found a ton of videos of homemade movies of the book. I think I could show students examples of what other readers have created as inspiration to make their own movie.
