I read the book Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks published by Grand Central Publishing. This book is about a young girl named Katie who escapes a dark secret of her past to start a new life over in a small town in North Carolina called Southport. Because of her past, Katie tries to avoid creating personal ties with anyone in the town to protect herself. Katie ends up meeting a widowed young man named Alex who has two young children. Katie ends up getting closer to Alex and his family and eventually falling in love. Another friend she makes, is a young woman named Jo. Jo starts to support Katie and care about each other as friends. This story explains how Katie works through her past before it takes control.
I think this book is more of a book for people in high school and older. I would not recommend this book to my students because of the appropriateness and situations that are brought up in the book. This book was also made into a movie as well. Although I wouldn't choose this book for my classroom, I think an activity a teacher could do with this book is about how we all struggle with one thing or another. We all have the choice to take control and move on from this, or allow it to take over in our life.
Subject: Family, bravery, love, friendship
- Genre: Historical Fiction, romance, young adult
