I'd Love to be a Fairy's Child by Robert Graves (Poetry)
I read the poem I'd Love to be a Fairy's Child by Robert Graves
Children born of fairy stock
Never need for shirt or frock,
Never want for food or fire,
Always get their heart's desire:
Jingle pockets full of gold,
Marry when they're seven years old.
Every fairy child may keep
Two strong ponies and ten sheep;
All have houses, each his own,
Built of brick or granite stone;
They live on cherries, they run wild--
I'd love to be a Fairy's child.
This poem is about a person who explains the many reasons why they want to be the child of a fairy. This poem flows really fluently and contains some rhyming. This poem is rather short, but I think it would be great to use in the younger grades because it's so short and simple. I think as a teacher I would be able to read this poem with my class and we could discuss and digest the different lines. As an assessment, I might be able to have my class write their own poem as why they might want to be the child of a certain animal, creature, or even fairy. I think children would be able to come up with really creative and cute ideas as to why they want to be the child of a certain animal or creature.
